Boards and Commissions

Application for all City Boards/Commission

The City of Wellington has a number of Boards and Commissions that advise the Governing Body.  The members of each of these bodies are appointed as provided for by applicable Kansas law or City ordinance.

In March 2011, the governing body took action to revise the process and timeline for appointments to the boards and commissions of the City.  The end result is that the application deadline and the appointment process the governing body follows, will occur each year at the same time for all boards and commissions, thus streamlining the process.  Term lengths will become the same for all positions, changes in the number of members of some boards will occur, and term limits will be implemented for appointments made in 2013 and after.  The goal is to create uniformity in the entire process in order to encourage citizen awareness of, as well as interest in, applying and serving on the various boards.

The implementation of the revised process and timeline will occur over the next three years.  Once the implementation is completed, all member positions will be for a four-year term beginning May 1.  Member terms will remain staggered to avoid the replacement of a full board in a single year.  Effective with appointments made in 2013 and after, term limits of two consectuve four-year terms will be imposed.

The governing body adopted Resolution No. 5418, establishing an application deadline and outlining the process that will be followed:

1.     That all applications for any opening on the boards and/or commissions of the City of Wellington, Kansas, shall be submitted prior to January 1st of any year in which the governing body is called upon to make appointments to said boards and/or commissions.

2.     If there are an insufficient number of applicants for any vacancies on any of the boards and/or commissions of the City of Wellington, Kansas, then members of the governing body may solicit applicants who shall submit their applications prior to February 1st.

3.     That prior to March 1st, the governing body shall meet and review all applications submitted for all city boards and/or commissions with no binding action.

4.     At the last regular meeting of the governing body in April or a meeting prior, the governing body shall make and approve its own appointments and the mayor’s appointments to the boards and/or commissions of the City of Wellington, Kansas.
