Wellington electric department employees made the short trip to Mcpherson Kansas on Thursday October the 16th for the two day KMU, Kansas Municipal Utilities, workshop and 2008 Lineman rodeo. Workshop topics included regulators, metering, and KMU mutual aid discussion. A total of 17 municipalities from across Kansas attended the two day event. On Thursday afternoon the rodeo kicked off with the flag rising to the top of a 35 foot pole. Joe Jackson of Wellington took first place in the pole top rescue and also took first in the obstacle course event. Jason Rains from Wellington took second in the reclosure change out, second in the digger truck event and took third in the hurtman rescue. Two person teams also competed for the overall trophy with the team of Joe Jackson and Jason Rains taking first which in return sent the coveted traveling trophy back to Wellington. Joe Jackson also took the best overall award for the top score of all events combined. Also attending from Wellington were lineman Brian Lewellen, crew leader John Bales, and electric distribution supervisor Cliff Zens lecturing on mutual aid.
The KMU lineman rodeo is held every year and gives lineman a chance to sharpen their skills and also work and interact with each other. Most of the municipalities in attendance help each other out during natural disaster situations through a mutual aid program. This gives cities the ability to obtain assistance when resources are depleted do to natural disasters such as tornadoes, ice storms, wind damage, etc.

This past year the City Council completed a comprehensive review of the Animal Control Section of the City Code. As a result, certain revisions were implemented in the Animal Control Section. One of these changes was the passage of a “Tethering Ordinance” by the City Council on April 15, 2008. The effective date was delayed until November 1, 2008 to allow pet owners time to comply with the requirements of the ordinance.
Pet owners needing financial assistance in obtaining dog runs or overhead trollies to comply with the “No Tethering Law” may send a request to the Wellington Humane Society; P. O. Box #494; Wellington, Ks. 67152. As funds are available, assistance will be offered by the local organization to those owners with the greatest need.
A link to a complete copy of the Tethering Ordinance is below.
Donations to the Wellington Humane Society, to assist in purchasing runs, panels or trollies for those pets currently living on a chain would be greatly appreciated.

The high cost of home heating fuels and utilities has caused many Americans to search for alternative home heating sources such as wood burning stoves, space heaters, and fireplaces. Heating is one of the leading causes of residential fires. (USFA)
Gus opened the presentation by explaining the competition, the Take Charge Committee efforts, the City’s standing in the Challenge, and the prize! He encouraged everyone to change to CFLs and to schedule a Free Home Energy Audit. Gus introduced Robin, Brian, and Cliff, and applauded their hard work.
The winner of the Home Energy Makeover valued at $500.00 was Dan and Kim Hefley! Consolation prizes were drawn and those winners were Ermaden McClure, Delorace Carr, Joni Hall, and Jack Cook. These items were donated by Mill Creek Lumber and will be handed out at the time of the post audit review.

What is my responsibility?
It is the owner's responsibility to maintain the entirety of their yard (and any other properties they may own). This includes all yard and areas between property lines and centerlines of streets, alleys, easements, and rights-of-ways, public or private.
What happens if I don't maintain my property?
If an owner fails to maintain their property, a Weed Notice will be issued. This Notice will remain in effect until December 31 of the same year. Separate Notices will not be sent for recurring violations within the same year.
If an owner does not maintain their property within 12 days after Notice is given, the City will mow the property at the owner's expense. Mowing costs are calculated by square footage of the property, and will be a minimum of $75.00. Recurring violations will be mowed without additional notice.
What happens if I sell my property?
City code now requires two actions if a property is sold that has an active notice issued. First, the seller must provide the new owner copies of any existing notice. Second, the seller must provide a code compliance officer a letter from the new owner acknowledging the existing notice(s) and accepting full responsibility, signed and notarized by the new owner. Failure to perform either of these two actions may result in prosecution.
*The above is a summary of City Code, and does not supersede City Code. For more information, speak to a code compliance officer.

In an effort to minimize electric service interruptions, tree-trimming crews will be in your area soon to perform tree trimming work and right-of-way clearing.
Falling trees and limbs are the leading cause of power outages. Furthermore, power restoration efforts are extremely costly. Safety hazards are posed when trees and vegetation come in contact with energized power lines. For these reasons, Wellington Electric Department constantly maintains a tree trimming and removal program.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as these professional crews perform the difficult and dangerous work necessary to ensure that you enjoy safe, reliable service.
