2008 KMU Lineman Rodeo

Wellington electric department employees made the short trip to Mcpherson Kansas on Thursday October the 16th for the two day KMU, Kansas Municipal Utilities, workshop and 2008 Lineman rodeo. Workshop topics included regulators, metering, and KMU mutual aid discussion. A total of 17 municipalities from across Kansas attended the two day event. On Thursday afternoon the rodeo kicked off with the flag rising to the top of a 35 foot pole. Joe Jackson of Wellington took first place in the pole top rescue and also took first in the obstacle course event. Jason Rains from Wellington took second in the reclosure change out, second in the digger truck event and took third in the hurtman rescue. Two person teams also competed for the overall trophy with the team of Joe Jackson and Jason Rains taking first which in return sent the coveted traveling trophy back to Wellington. Joe Jackson also took the best overall award for the top score of all events combined. Also attending from Wellington were lineman Brian Lewellen, crew leader John Bales, and electric distribution supervisor Cliff Zens lecturing on mutual aid.

The KMU lineman rodeo is held every year and gives lineman a chance to sharpen their skills and also work and interact with each other. Most of the municipalities in attendance help each other out during natural disaster situations through a mutual aid program. This gives cities the ability to obtain assistance when resources are depleted do to natural disasters such as tornadoes, ice storms, wind damage, etc.

Back To School Safety

Back To School Safety

  • SCHOOL ZONES

Keep in mind that the speed in a school zone is 20 mph. School zones have a reduced speed limit so that drivers can stop if a child darts in front of them. You could be subject to a large fine if you ignore the signs. Be extra cautious around school crossing areas slow down and watch for children on the way to school. When approaching a school speed zone with flashing yellow lights, reduce speed to 20 MPH and maintain it until the end of the school zone.

  • CROSSWALKS

You should not block the crosswalk at any time with vehicles! Crossing Guards are located throughout Wellington. Be observant of children crossing the street when approaching an intersection. Allow children waiting at a crosswalk to cross. Before entering a crosswalk, be sure there are no children in the lane or in adjacent lanes.
  • SCHOOL BUSES

  • When you see a school bus with flashing YELLOW lights, drivers are expected to slow down to a speed that will allow for a sudden stop.
  • A school bus with flashing RED lights signals that students are either getting on or off the bus. Drivers must STOP and wait for the bus driver to turn the flashers off, no matter which direction they are traveling. Students crossing the street after exiting a school bus should cross in front of the bus. Please wait until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is retracted before proceeding.
  • Failure to do so could make you subject to fines. Subsequent offenses can result in loss of driver's license.
  • All school buses are required to stop at railroad crossings. Keep enough distance between your vehicle and the school bus to avoid a rear-end collision.

PRESS RELEASE - FIRE & EMS

Press Release:

The Wellington Fire & EMS Department has received an injury prevention grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to purchase carbon monoxide detectors.  Through the grant we can place a carbon monoxide detector in 100 homes within the City of Wellington.  Carbon monoxide is a gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.  It is produced by fuel burning appliances, such as furnaces, vehicles, and fireplaces.  Every year carbon monoxide claims hundreds of lives and sends over 50,000 poisoning victims a year to emergency rooms.  A working carbon monoxide detector in your home can give you early warning of elevated carbon monoxide levels and a chance to evacuate the home and correct the problem.  It is recommended that a carbon monoxide detector be installed on each level of your home.

The Fire & EMS Department will be targeting those who are elderly or those with children as they are more susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning.  If you do not have a carbon monoxide detector and cannot afford one please contact the department at 620 326-7443.  Fire & EMS staff will make arrangements to install a detector in your home at no cost and there is a limit of one detector per home. The detectors are electrically powered with a battery backup in the event electricity is lost.

Tethering Ordinance

Effective November 1, 2008

This past year the City Council completed a comprehensive review of the Animal Control Section of the City Code.  As a result, certain revisions were implemented in the Animal Control Section.   One of these changes was the passage of a “Tethering Ordinance” by the City Council on April 15, 2008.  The effective date was delayed until November 1, 2008 to allow pet owners time to comply with the requirements of the ordinance.

Pet owners needing financial assistance in obtaining dog runs or overhead trollies to comply with the “No Tethering Law” may send a request to the Wellington Humane Society; P. O. Box #494; Wellington, Ks.  67152.  As funds are available, assistance will be offered by the local organization to those owners with the greatest need.

A link to a complete copy of the Tethering Ordinance is below.

Donations to the Wellington Humane Society, to assist in purchasing runs, panels or trollies for those pets currently living on a chain would be greatly appreciated.

The winner of the Home Energy Makeover valued at $500.00 was Dan and Kim Hefley!    Consolation prizes were drawn and those winners were Ermaden McClure, Delorace Carr, Joni Hall, and Jack Cook. Reminder of City Weed and Wild Growth Policies

What is a weed or wild growth?

1.       Brush and woody vines

2.       Indigenous grasses that attain large growth and may become a fire hazard

3.       Growth that may bear downy or winged seeds

4.       Growth that harbors pests or vermin

5.       Non-ornamental grasses or plants that are 12 inches in height

What is my responsibility?

It is the owner's responsibility to maintain the entirety of their yard (and any other properties they may own). This includes all yard and areas between property lines and centerlines of streets, alleys, easements, and rights-of-ways, public or private.

What happens if I don't maintain my property?

If an owner fails to maintain their property, a Weed Notice will be issued. This Notice will remain in effect until December 31 of the same year. Separate Notices will not be sent for recurring violations within the same year.

If an owner does not maintain their property within 12 days after Notice is given, the City will mow the property at the owner's expense. Mowing costs are calculated by square footage of the property, and will be a minimum of $75.00. Recurring violations will be mowed without additional notice.

What happens if I sell my property?

City code now requires two actions if a property is sold that has an active notice issued. First, the seller must provide the new owner copies of any existing notice. Second, the seller must provide a code compliance officer a letter from the new owner acknowledging the existing notice(s) and accepting full responsibility, signed and notarized by the new owner. Failure to perform either of these two actions may result in prosecution.

*The above is a summary of City Code, and does not supersede City Code. For more information, speak to a code compliance officer.

Volunteer Opportunity

We still have volunteer opportunities available at the Wellington Recycling Center.  Each Saturday the facility is open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and is staffed by different community groups.  Each group provides 8-10 individuals to assist customers unloading their recyclables and receives $100 per Saturday.  Times available include November and December.  Groups can volunteer on a weekly basis or for an entire month.  This is a great way for church and civic groups, youth sports, and non-profits to raise money for activities.  Please contact Jeremy Jones at 620-326-3631 to schedule.

Quiet Zone

The Quiet Zone proposal has been submited to BNSF.  Here is additional information explaining "quiet zones".

Tree-Trimming

In an effort to minimize electric service interruptions, tree-trimming crews will be in your area soon to perform tree trimming work and right-of-way clearing.

Falling trees and limbs are the leading cause of power outages.  Furthermore, power restoration efforts are extremely costly.  Safety hazards are posed when trees and vegetation come in contact with energized power lines.  For these reasons, Wellington Electric Department constantly maintains a tree trimming and removal program.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as these professional crews perform the difficult and dangerous work necessary to ensure that you enjoy safe, reliable service.
