About The Community
Wellington (est. pop. 7,997) is a rural community in south central Kansas. Located approximately 23 miles south of Wichita, Wellington is the county seat and the largest community in Sumner County (est. pop. 23,591). The local economy has historically been anchored by agriculture, designating Sumner County as the Wheat Capital of the World. However, with Wellington's close proximity to Wichita - the Air Capital of the World - precision machining and aerospace manufacturing has grown over the decades to be a staple industry for the region. Today, Wellington is home to three major aerospace suppliers:
- GKN Aerospace
- TECT Aerospace
- Triumph Accessory Services
Aerospace manufacturing is strengthened with the presence of specialized component vendors, including: American Metals Fabrication Inc., Tubular Products Specialists, Clark Manufacturing, and Oxwell Pneumatics.
In addition to agriculture and aerospace manufacturing, healthcare is also a significant contributor to the local economy. Wellington is home to Sumner Regional Medical Center, which provides 15+ south central Kansas communities with high quality inpatient and outpatient care, along with emergency services. The 80-bed regional hospital provides services with the latest technology in the following areas:
- Advanced Imaging Capabilities
- Level 3 Maternity Care
- Cancer Care
- General Surgery
- Residential Care
- Short-term Rehabilitation
Other health care services available in the community include general dentistry, mental health services, and chiropractic and physical fitness services.
Wellington has a number of characteristics that make the community a strong contender for economic growth and development. The City of Wellington has a strong relationship with Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas and USD 353 Wellington Public Schools to help address the critical need for a skilled workforce. The local workforce is non-union, reducing labor costs and allowing businesses to be more competitive in the global marketplace. Wellington also has a strong, multi-modal transportation network, comprised of multiple highways - US-81, US-160, and I-35; two major railroad companies - Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific; and the Wellington Municipal Airport, located north of town on US-81.
