The electric distribution department has twelve employees that construct, operate and maintain over 150 miles of overhead and underground power lines and electric delivering equipment. This department is also responsible for the maintenance of the city streetlights,ballpark lights,school zone signals and traffic lights. Line workers with this department are currently enrolled in or have already successfully completed a State of Kansas certified journeyman lineman program through Kansas Municipal Utilities Inc. These employees participate in an annual KMU lineman rodeo, placing first in two of the last four years. Employees of this department attend classes,workshops and events throughout the year to keep up with the ever changing technology and skills needed to provide dependable and reliable energy to the citizens of Wellington. Twelve employees make up this department with over 150 years combined experience.
Wellington electric department is a member of KMEA, Kansas Municipal Energy Agency. By being a member of this organization, Wellington electric is able to assist other municipalities across the United States in times of crisis due to natural disasters such as tornadoes, ice storms, wind storms and even hurricanes. Wellington has provided assistance to several communities, to name a few, Pratt KS, Anthony KS, Greensburg KS, Chetopa KS, Blackwell OK and Lakeland FL. In return, Wellington has received assistance from most all of these same cities.
